mocat is right on the mark. It's a money thing. A guy at work used to take several trip to South Carolina every summer and charge to "guide" guys here on to big cats there. He made lots of money and so did the state of SC. He tried it here taking people on the Missouri and Mississippi and it failed. A boat wreck ended his "guide service". My point? The state (MDC) is constantly trying to squeeze every penny they can out of people by claiming we have the biggest, best and more. Bucks, turkeys and now catfish. They cut us out to cater to the money men and call it conservation. I wish they would quit pi$$ing down my back and then tell me it's raining.

We had both MDC Deputy Directors on our radio show this week, to discuss the proposed blue catfish slot-limit. You can listen to it anytime at our website below. We get into the discussion in Segment 2 and 3.

Linda - What do you suggest? I see no input or advice from you. If you can not see the decline in the large fish availabe on Truman in the last 15 years then you need to spend more time on the lake!!! How rough huh? I do agree that the Truman catfishing is not what it was when guys could run up behind the dam with their little boats and we'd pull out some monsters. Measuring fish is not that difficult. I have measured tens of thousand of channels and believe they will get you quicker then a blue most days. I am not saying I fully agree or disagree with this proposed reg change. But, I have seen the end of multiple shocking boats and do know the lake is covered in smaller blues and not as many larger ones as it once had.

John looks like the current regs are working we just need to wait for the smaller ones to grow up!

Ok - so how do you implement this "waiting"? Realize you are talking about thousands of people you have to convince to wait at the same time. A slot or length limit does define the waiting period.....

I would suggest leaving the regs alone, since there is no problem. They just cut the limit in half less than three years ago, and the fishermen seem putting up with that OK. People who know how to catch the big blues are still doing it. There is no public uproar about lack of blue cat. You can't keep them off your lines. There are no scientific studies to show low numbers or high harvest. The tagging study showed normal harvest rates, and it didn't include any blue cats over 20 lbs. The info they are feeding the public is not what the data showed. It's just like the push to ban lead shot on all CA's a few years ago. Their own scientific studies didn't match the agenda, and the public had to loudly point this out before they would back off. The word has spread fast around the lakes, and the MDC is already feeling the heat. Hopefully, it may not make it through the regulations committee.

The MDC has now backed off (for the moment) to getting this reg pushed through by 2012 with an increase in the limit to 10 blue cat less than 25" and a no-keep slot-limit of 25" to 35". It still has no chance of flying with the public, but the MDC refuses to give up. They are still spreading the same talking points that can be easily disproved.
