i am young and this upcoming season will only be my second one. One day last week i was bored and just started to make my first homemade coon cage trap and i did suprisingly well. I got everything wired together and i made the door work well i just could not figure out a way to make the door stayed locked once it falls.. it is a swing down door style trap and i do not have a welder to weld something to make it stayed locked. I have found trappers are very ingenious and i am sure somebody can show me how to make a good lock. thanks ct25

If you have vertical bars these might work?Split ring or quick link can be installed without a welder.Takes both hands to raise them up and set door in the up position. Then when door lowers, rings fall down and animal can't raise them.

I can see how that would work really well for a guillotine-type door. What would be a good lock for a swinging-type door like the illustration shows?

For that set up the door of the trap needs to be at least four to five inches back into the cage when it is let down. Then at the bottom edge setting dead center of the trap weld a 3 to four inch piece of 1/8 inch piece of round steel stock into place. With a angle so as when the trap door shuts the steel will spring down and once the door passes it it will spring up locking the door in place. Then to release apply pressure to push the steel stock down and raise door. I hope this helps explain it better.

That is a swinging hinged door lock.In the pic I have a rod running all the way across bottom of trap, that rod has a ring on each end of it.Imagine the rod was gone. Now just install a ring or quick link on each side of cage.Install it around the outside vertical bar of door and bar of cage frame.Raise rings up to top to set trigger, they will let the door open and set ok.Then they fall to bottom and lock when door drops. You might find one to look at wherever they sell Duke traps and cages in your area? Our True Value hardware has them.Where are you located CT25?
