yeah, I made the mistake last year of picking a black staining polypore but didn't eat it because I knew that once you start finding hens they're usually everywhere and it was too early. I've only found hens after the nights start to cool in the early fall. I put away 30 1 gallon freezer bags of hens last year. Black staining polypores turn black where they're bruised and are also tougher, info says they taste like liver, I prefer my liver from an animal. There are very nice smooth and golden chanterelles fruiting right now, as well as milkies, boletes, and black trumpets. Giant puff balls should be on before long.
damn walleye, that's nice, you go above the morels!!! I never did eat any wild shrooms other than the morels..
Yep. A walk down an unknown road. There's a bit of nervousness eating this stuff for the first time. You've got to kind of ease into it. So far I've been good with my identification. There's several more 'shrooms I'm trying to find. Found tons of one type of mushroom last week. Pretty sure they were okay, but I was not brave enough to try 'em. Too many poisonous look-a-likes.
Last week I lived off of the land around my house. Mushrooms and venison. And it was all dang good too. You're missing out if you've never eaten the Chanterelles. They are every bit as good as morels and are much easier to find. More plentiful and less work too.

farmnhunter: If you want to avoid feline, you can't use any meat or fish item or scent. Try a piece of black licorish covered by dairy feed, or lucky charms or corn/koolaid (mix 1 qt whole corn with a package of grape koolaid)
