Propely used they dont hurt fur. Thats why a person needs to take the course to know proper use. Big fear with snares and CRs are jackasses that dont know what they are doing that hang them all over the place. Give us a bad name. Improperly used, a knife or a .22 messes up fur too.
The CR's were designed to take long haired fur such as coyotes and fox. Both have enough fur around their necks that fur damage isn't an issue,if used properly. Setting too close to a barbed wire fence will result in a damaged hide and is illegal. The CR must not be closer than 12 inches from a fence when closed. That reg is for the protection on non-target catches of the domestic kind.Cat's can show damage if they get hip caught sometimes ,with a burn mark on the hide and some fur damage where the lock rubs.A cat can get almost through a 6 inch loop sometimes and be hip caught.
Although they were meant for the live market, they are a very good tool for taking fur also. One just has to remember not to allow for ANY intanglement,be it a fence, trees,or what have you. Some folks use them to take coon and to me,they are a very poor tool for that. Coons cannot be humanely handled with them. I won't go into the reason, but trust me,there are better ways to take coons.
Yes it's possible to snare rats, but in Mo. we have to have a deer stop to prevent the loop from closing to more than 2 1/2 inches. That right there would make Mo. snares unfeasible for rats. They would just slip on out of them.

farmnhunter: If you want to avoid feline, you can't use any meat or fish item or scent. Try a piece of black licorish covered by dairy feed, or lucky charms or corn/koolaid (mix 1 qt whole corn with a package of grape koolaid)
