Okay, about those Monties...
First off, face the small area on the jaw where it contact the pan with a good, small file, Clean it up, and try to match the old angle that's already there. Then do the same to the pan on the surface where it meets the jaw, same angle. Probably 90% of the time, if you have good springs, this will be all it takes to bring your tension near the two-pound mark. However, I often take mine a step further.
With a good SMALL file, cut a small notch into the pan, again exactly where it meets the pan. On a perfect day with the trap Gods smiling you will get a nite-latch this way that will produce the audible "click" when the trap is set. At worse you will still get a good, solid surface for the jaw to set itself into, providing manageable tension. Practice at it, and keep the notch small. The right file is everything.
