This will be my first year on the trapline as well. My goal is to make each set to the best of my ability. To me that is more important than numbers. Imho do it right each time and the fur will come

Ya thats all very true take your time find a good location and make the best sets. I was just wondering what kind of numbers trappers get their first year not to predict or anything just a ballpark.

depends on how many traps you set out, how long you run them, the availability of the animal your trapping in the area, etc..... cats will be your hardest to catch in my opinion for the first year trapper.

If you catch 2 possums and one skunk and two coon and one coyote and skin them right and finish the hides and get a good price then you are a trapper and you done alright. (And you have out done alot of these know-it-all internet trappers who didnt put traps out last year. Yup, they are out there)

no idea why that posted twice. Guess my smartphone isnt so smart after all If its your post then you can delete it. It is easy to post twice on this cockamamie website. You can go back and delete one. Why do they call them "smart phones"? That is so wrong....

my first year(this year) my goal was to get a predator, which i managed to get.. i started out in the last half of season with very few traps, but did manage to pull i think 13 coon, 3 skunks, 0 possums, and a gray fox.. for me that was pretty good imo... i'd concentrate your goals on getting and finding good trapping ground.. that seems to be the hardest part of it all..

Thank you jd2000 and southernstyle88 that is what I was looking for not to jenks anything just a goal to try to meet. Did you both meet that goal? I am going to trap hard for coon and fox to start with but I am wanting to get after some bobcats the clearcuts around here haven't been trapped in years and I am seeing more cats when deer hunting so I know they are here just to figure out how to get them in my trap.

Basetiger, The thing I have learned about bobcat (and you will hear different from others) is location is number one and use fresh meat for bait, I mean fresh (something that you would cook up and eat yourself). Now maybe I was lucky but, I caught 3 bobcats out of the same dirt hole set using nothing but fresh meat in the hole this past season. No lure, no sent, no urine, no attractor, just plain fresh meat in a dirt hole set. Oh, did I mention that it was a dirt hole set... lol...
Thing about trapping is, ya gotta get out there and lay some steal to catch the critters no matter what....
Hope the best for ya...

Hay Mofo that sounds good do you mean like freezer burnt meat out of the freezer ? or fresh killed ? And how long do you leave it in there until you re bait ? Thanks for the help I plan on keeping the steal in the ground. I am starting now getting all my stuff together a little at a time.

I did use freezer burnt meat (I would of still ate it tho). The thing about the 3 that I caught in the same set was, they were caught within one week. I pulled the traps after that to leave for the holidays and when I reset I set in different location. That dirt hole that caught the 3 cats was worked for the rest of the season. I should of reset there but didn't.

I wouldnt set a catch goal, maybe a number of DAYS trapping goal. One thing you should ask yourself is, how long do you want to stay up skinning? Also, 10 good sets on location will out produce 30 crappy sets slung out in the woods, IMO. Have fun, trapping is a great way to enjoy the outdoors.

This will also be my first year, I have a doz. DP's and one live trap. I hope to catch 13 critters, would be good if they were all coon, but goal it to say I trapped one criter for each trap I own. I may try to get one more trap before season to get away from the number 13 !!
