I'm am just getting started and working on a list of things to get traps and everything I'll need to get started. I have read the starters thread that Dale put up here over and over and I got a pretty decent list made up. the thing I'm needing some help with is bait and lures. I know nothing about this stuff and was hopeing some of you might be able to suggest some brands and particular baits and lures to start with. I'm sure everyone has their favorites and would love to hear them so I can figure out which ones to start out with it would really help a lot

Anything thing that smells fishy for coon bait. Bait for cats should be as fresh as possible. Tainted baits for yotes. Any gland lure will do for k9's and cats. Get 3 or 4 different kinds and mix them up on your sets. I use Hawbakers lure just because that is what I used in the past. I did hear tho, a yote will come to fox gland lure and urine but a fox wont come to yote gland lure and urine. Don't know how much truth there is in that, but that is what I heard. To me all the lures for coon kinda smell sweet. I don't use a lure for coon, I just bait for them.

well, that aint been said yet. When I was a kid. my Dad taught me to use an ear of corn. Everything eats corn including fox and coyote. I get a big kick out of all the exotic imports people think they need to catch local varmits that are looking for anything to eat.

Back in the '60s, I checked out a library book about Coyotes. It was written by a US trapper and referenced US records. Stomach contents of coyotes revealed grasshoppers and persimmon seed and acorns and chunks of rubber and tinfoil and feathers and fur and bottlecaps and mice. Rodents were like 90% of yote diet. I use mice in pocket sets but I catch them. They are not a cavens or hawbaker product.

I think you made half that sheit up krank, but anyway.... Back when I lived in IL, my house was always infested with mice in the winter time. So I had mice traps goin off left and right, had like 50 of those little bass turds in the freezer. Told the older feller that I was trapping with back then about it and he laughed at me. So I used them on my own line. Didn't catch nothin but a field rat with em. I think the rat was trying to hump my bait myself, but. It did look eye appealing to me tho. A mouse size dirt hole with a trap in front of it with a dead mouse in the hole, what could resist that.

I was telling Bigjohn about a lure I made out of eggs. Scrambled in a jar and aged for two monthes before season. Didnt have a putrid smell but it was loud. Caught two yotes with it Also read on another forum where alot of guys grind mice up for a lure/bait. I was using them whole in a pocket set. Caught one yote on that. I like the 6's idea of an "all call" lure. Definitely a "different strokes for different folks" deal. Oh yeah, coons. Dont take much.....fish and fish oil. Maybe a marshmellow for a visual. I trail them Mmw's all over the place so my coons know what a mmw is and are looking for them.
